Heat pumps can be a great alternative to traditional air conditioners. Like an AC, they can be paired with a forced-air furnace or air handler. Heat pumps look a lot like traditional air conditioning units but they work a bit differently.
Like a traditional air conditioner, they use the refrigeration cycle to provide cool air in your home. However, these units can use the refrigeration cycle to provide heat as well. To simplify it, they basically run in reverse. The refrigeration cycle allows the heat pump or AC to absorb heat and move it from one area to another. On cooling mode, the unit absorbs the heat from inside your home and releases it outside. On heating mode, it finds heat in the ambient outdoor air and moves it inside to heat your home. While that might not seem like something that can work in our harsh, Wisconsin winters, heat pumps use technology that allow them to work in subzero temperatures.
On heating mode, heat pumps are more efficient than electric and gas-fired furnaces. This is because they don’t have to “create” heat but rather move it from one area to another. Many people who use heat pumps chose them for this reason. Higher energy efficiency means lower operating costs.
Important note for heat pump installations: if you plan to rely on your heat pump for home heating, you must choose a unit that is rated for low temperatures. There are many varieties of heat pumps. The ones that work great in Florida do not work well here. We can use heat pumps efficiently in Wisconsin but you have to have the right one!

Removed humidifier water supply line from newly installed HVAC units in basement utility area. Eliminated existing 3/4" copper supply piping and prepared system for proper reconnection using two 3/4" couplings and replacement pipe section to restore main water line integrity after humidifier removal.
Completed Family Rewards cooling maintenance visit on a 10-year-old air conditioning system. During inspection, identified dual capacitor rated at 45 MFD reading low at 40 MFD. Recommended replacement of dual capacitor to restore proper system performance. Customer requested time to consult with spouse before authorizing capacitor replacement. System currently operational but component replacement needed to prevent future failure.
Responded to no cooling complaint on 14-year-old Goodman system with reported hissing noise from indoor unit during AC operation. Upon arrival, diagnosed high head pressure on R410A system with abnormal hissing sound originating from furnace area. Performed system evaluation including condenser coil inspection, which showed acceptable cleanliness, and verified air filter condition was satisfactory. # No Cool Service Call - Lennox Air Conditioning Unit Responded to a no cooling complaint on a 20-year-old Lennox air conditioning system. Upon arrival, confirmed the outdoor condensing unit was running but the system was not producing adequate cooling. Performed diagnostic testing and identified a failed high pressure safety switch preventing normal system operation. The high pressure switch is a critical safety component designed to protect the compressor from operating under excessive refrigerant pressure conditions, which can occur due to restricted airflow, overcharge, or system restrictions. After diagnosing the faulty high pressure switch, temporarily bypassed the defective safety control to restore cooling function to the residence. Documented the equipment's age at approximately 20 years old, well beyond the typical 10-15 year service life expectancy for residential air conditioning equipment. Responded to follow-up service call for toilet installation that was left for homeowner to complete after previous pipe repair work. Upon arrival, discovered approximately one foot of debris in the drainage pipe, a broken toilet flange requiring repair, and an improperly sealed 4-inch cleanout plug that was actively leaking water onto the floor. Cleared debris from pipe, repaired the damaged flange, properly set and secured the toilet to the repaired flange, and sealed the 4-inch cleanout plug to eliminate the water leak.
Responded to no cooling complaint on 10+ year old system. Verified thermostat calling for cooling and checked indoor unit components including filter, condensate drain, and blower assembly—all found satisfactory. Proceeded to outdoor unit and discovered condenser not operating. Performed electrical diagnostics and identified dual run capacitor (35+5 MFD) completely failed with no stored charge, preventing outdoor fan and compressor operation. Recommended immediate capacitor replacement to restore cooling function; homeowner declined service and opted to replace component themselves. Performed heating system evaluation as requested.
