Heat pumps can be a great alternative to traditional air conditioners. Like an AC, they can be paired with a forced-air furnace or air handler. Heat pumps look a lot like traditional air conditioning units but they work a bit differently.
Like a traditional air conditioner, they use the refrigeration cycle to provide cool air in your home. However, these units can use the refrigeration cycle to provide heat as well. To simplify it, they basically run in reverse. The refrigeration cycle allows the heat pump or AC to absorb heat and move it from one area to another. On cooling mode, the unit absorbs the heat from inside your home and releases it outside. On heating mode, it finds heat in the ambient outdoor air and moves it inside to heat your home. While that might not seem like something that can work in our harsh, Wisconsin winters, heat pumps use technology that allow them to work in subzero temperatures.
On heating mode, heat pumps are more efficient than electric and gas-fired furnaces. This is because they don’t have to “create” heat but rather move it from one area to another. Many people who use heat pumps chose them for this reason. Higher energy efficiency means lower operating costs.
Important note for heat pump installations: if you plan to rely on your heat pump for home heating, you must choose a unit that is rated for low temperatures. There are many varieties of heat pumps. The ones that work great in Florida do not work well here. We can use heat pumps efficiently in Wisconsin but you have to have the right one!

Responded to no cooling complaint on residential air conditioning system. Upon arrival, found 1.5 ton unit running continuously without achieving setpoint temperature. Performed diagnostic evaluation using manifold gauges to check system pressures and operation. Investigation revealed that the system has been operating continuously since occupancy began approximately nine years ago. Property has undergone significant renovations and additions, expanding the conditioned space to approximately 1900-2400 square feet. Assessment determined that the existing 1.5 ton capacity is severely undersized for the current square footage of the home, resulting in inability to adequately cool the space and continuous runtime. System is functioning mechanically but lacks sufficient capacity to meet the cooling load demands of the expanded living area. Recommended system replacement with properly sized equipment to match current home dimensions and cooling requirements.
Completed installation of customer-supplied bathroom vanity with integrated sink basin and chrome faucet fixture. Connected all water supply lines to existing shut-off valves and verified proper drainage and leak-free operation of all plumbing connections.
Completed annual boiler maintenance visit on a 3-year-old unit. Thoroughly cleaned heat exchanger which showed significant dust and dirt accumulation on vertical fins and honeycomb mesh structure. Inspected and verified proper system drainage, confirmed ignitor and sensor are in good operating condition, and verified gas valve assembly and control wiring connections are secure and functioning correctly.
Inspected shower fixtures for reported dripping showerhead and worn on/off selectors. Evaluated existing chrome trim kits and valve cartridges in dual-control shower system, noting deterioration of control mechanisms. Provided estimate for replacement of trim kits and cartridges for both shower controls to resolve leaking and restore proper operation.
Responded to kitchen sink leak with water pooling on floor. Upon inspection, found P-trap clogged and compression drain fitting gaskets failing, causing water to discharge from drain assembly when faucet was operated. Cleared obstruction from trap, replaced deteriorated gaskets, and installed new sections of drain pipe beneath sink to restore proper drainage and eliminate leaks. Additionally, cleared blockage from cold water side of laundry sink to restore full water flow. Cleaned work area, tested all fixtures for proper operation, and confirmed no active leaks present upon completion.
Replaced frost-free hose bibb in crawl space utilizing existing plumbing connections. Removed old fixture and installed new hose bibb, ensuring proper sealing and secure mounting to prevent leaks and freeze damage.

Upon inspection, found Rheem Performance water heater installed without proper temperature and pressure relief valve discharge pipe, creating a safety hazard. Installed discharge pipe on relief valve per plumbing code requirements. Water heater requires elevation of 6 inches to meet current code standards and has multiple water lines that need to be capped for proper system operation.
Responded to service call for washing machine water supply issue where hot and cold water lines were connected incorrectly during previous installation. Upon arrival, confirmed washing machine was calling for cold water but receiving hot water and vice versa. Inspected water supply hoses at rear of washing machine and identified hoses were crossed at connection points. Disconnected both hot and cold water supply hoses from washing machine inlet valves. Reconnected hoses to proper inlet connections, ensuring hot water line connected to hot water inlet and cold water line connected to cold water inlet. Verified proper water flow and temperature at each connection. Tested washing machine operation to confirm correct water temperature delivery during fill cycles.
Responded to service call for shower head leaking behind wall. Upon inspection, identified the shower arm as the source of the leak. Although additional potential leaks were observed at the tub spout and tub drain overflow assembly, the customer requested repair limited to the shower arm only. Successfully removed the defective shower arm and installed a new replacement unit, ensuring proper thread seal and secure connection to the water supply line. Verified no active leaks at the shower arm connection point upon completion and restored full shower functionality.
Performed comprehensive AC tune-up on 4-year-old Lennox system. Disassembled outdoor condenser unit, thoroughly cleaned accumulated dirt and debris from internal components, coils, and fan assembly. Reassembled unit and verified system is operating properly with adequate cooling performance.
Responded to no cooling call on 20-year-old air conditioning system. Upon arrival, diagnosed issue as low voltage signal not passing through low pressure safety switch. Bypassed switch to verify system operation and observed unit start successfully. Performed temperature split test showing only 10-degree differential, indicating insufficient refrigerant charge. Connected manifold gauges and confirmed system low on refrigerant. Temporarily left low pressure switch jumpered to provide limited cooling capability until replacement system installation. Consulted with homeowner regarding new equipment options, energy efficiency rebates, and system replacement recommendations. Successfully cleared drain line, evacuating standing water from drain pan. Replaced heavily restricted air filter that was impeding airflow. Proceeded to outdoor unit which was inoperative. Diagnosed failed dual run capacitor preventing compressor and condenser fan motor operation. Outdoor unit exhibited severe neglect with heavy dirt and debris accumulation on condenser coil restricting airflow. Fan housing showed significant physical damage to top panel, likely from hail impact, causing structural deformation. Replaced failed capacitor and performed thorough coil cleaning to restore proper heat transfer. System restored to operational status with adequate cooling performance. However, noted condenser fan motor operating out of balance due to damaged housing, which will likely lead to premature motor failur
Responded to no cooling call on 32-year-old Lennox system. Diagnosed failed blower motor as cause of system failure. Replaced blower motor to restore operation per customer request to maintain system until scheduled advisor appointment.
Responded to service call regarding persistent salty taste in water following water softener regeneration cycles. Performed water hardness testing at multiple fixtures, measuring 20 grains at kitchen cold tap and 0 grains at bathroom cold tap. Adjusted softener regeneration cycle parameters by increasing flush times by several minutes to allow complete brine tank drainage and prevent premature valve closure that was causing residual salt to enter the distribution system.
Responded to no cool call on 4-year-old air conditioning system. Upon arrival, confirmed system was operational but not maintaining desired temperature. Observed liquid line temperature was excessively hot to touch, indicating potential airflow restriction or refrigerant issue. Indoor air filter was clean. Inspected outdoor condensing unit and discovered heavy debris accumulation including bird nesting material completely obstructing the condenser coil and fan assembly. Removed all debris and thoroughly cleaned condenser coil to restore proper airflow. Electrical connections showed no signs of damage despite wildlife intrusion. After cleaning, allowed system to run and stabilize before taking refrigerant measurements. Recorded 40 degrees superheat and 0 degrees subcool, indicating system was significantly undercharged.
