Heat pumps can be a great alternative to traditional air conditioners. Like an AC, they can be paired with a forced-air furnace or air handler. Heat pumps look a lot like traditional air conditioning units but they work a bit differently.
Like a traditional air conditioner, they use the refrigeration cycle to provide cool air in your home. However, these units can use the refrigeration cycle to provide heat as well. To simplify it, they basically run in reverse. The refrigeration cycle allows the heat pump or AC to absorb heat and move it from one area to another. On cooling mode, the unit absorbs the heat from inside your home and releases it outside. On heating mode, it finds heat in the ambient outdoor air and moves it inside to heat your home. While that might not seem like something that can work in our harsh, Wisconsin winters, heat pumps use technology that allow them to work in subzero temperatures.
On heating mode, heat pumps are more efficient than electric and gas-fired furnaces. This is because they don’t have to “create” heat but rather move it from one area to another. Many people who use heat pumps chose them for this reason. Higher energy efficiency means lower operating costs.
Important note for heat pump installations: if you plan to rely on your heat pump for home heating, you must choose a unit that is rated for low temperatures. There are many varieties of heat pumps. The ones that work great in Florida do not work well here. We can use heat pumps efficiently in Wisconsin but you have to have the right one!

Responded to no-cool call on 17-year-old Carrier air conditioning system. Upon arrival, confirmed unit was not running despite thermostat calling for cooling. Diagnosed failed capacitor as root cause of system failure. Replaced defective capacitor and verified system operation. Checked temperature splits at basement air handler and confirmed proper cooling performance within manufacturer specifications. Discussed system age and replacement options given the unit's advanced age and potential for future component failures.
Returned to property to complete kitchen sink supply line conversion from irrigation meter to house meter as previously discussed with customer. Successfully disconnected kitchen supply from incorrect irrigation meter connection and reconnected to proper house water meter, ensuring correct water source for potable use. Responded to service call regarding excessive heat pump runtime and elevated winter utility costs. Upon inspection, discovered heat pump was configured to lock out at 40°F outdoor temperature, but outdoor sensor was receiving direct morning sunlight on east-facing unit, causing false temperature readings and preventing proper lockout during cold weather operation. Reconfigured Honeywell Home ProSeries thermostat to utilize internet-based outdoor temperature data instead of outdoor sensor input. Set up homeowner's mobile app connectivity for remote monitoring. Verified system cooling operation and confirmed proper thermostat functionality with new temperature source configuration. System now operating within normal parameters with corrected outdoor temperature reference.
Completed installation of comfort height toilet in bathroom with proper mounting and sealing. Installed 1-inch inline whole house sediment spin-down filter to protect plumbing fixtures and appliances from particulate contamination. Installed pressure switch rated for 40-60 PSI operation along with pressure gauge on well tank to monitor and maintain proper system pressure. All components tested and verified operational upon completion.
Responded to service call for air conditioning system not maintaining adequate cooling. Upon inspection, found unit operational but inefficient. Identified heavily soiled and plugged condenser coil restricting airflow. Performed thorough cleaning and rinse of condenser coil. Performed comprehensive tune-up maintenance on four air conditioning systems. Inspected and verified proper operation of all evaporator drain lines, replaced one difficult-to-access air filter that was severely clogged due to lack of maintenance, and confirmed proper airflow settings on all units. Conducted thorough electrical inspection of outdoor units including capacitors and contactors, all testing within manufacturer specifications. Disassembled and performed deep cleaning of condenser coils on all four outdoor units, which were heavily obstructed with debris, and flushed thoroughly until completely clear. Responded to no cooling complaint on Carrier air conditioning system. Upon arrival, found indoor unit operating but outdoor condensing unit not running despite contactor being energized. Diagnosed failed dual run capacitor preventing compressor and condenser fan operation. Replaced defective capacitor with new unit, performed coil cleaning on outdoor unit, and verified proper system operation with normal cooling restored.
Responded to air conditioning system running continuously and unresponsive to thermostat control. Upon inspection, discovered improper wire connections at the furnace while thermostat wiring was correct. Corrected all furnace wiring connections, restoring proper communication between thermostat and system. Unit now cycles normally with full thermostat control, eliminating the need to use circuit breaker for manual operation.
Responded to no cooling complaint on 9-year-old residential air conditioning system that failed following power outage. Diagnosed and replaced failed capacitor, performed condenser coil cleaning, and restored unit operation. System pressure and temperature analysis revealed low refrigerant charge with subcooling measuring 1°F against required 10°F, indicating potential leak in R-410A system. Provided repair options for leak detection and refrigerant recharge, with service advisor follow-up scheduled to monitor system performance.

Responded to service call for reported pressure tank noise and lack of water pressure. Upon arrival, conducted thorough inspection of pressure tank system and associated components. Tested system operation and verified proper functionality of all equipment. Determined that pressure tank was operating within normal parameters and water pressure was adequate. Identified source of noise as the pressure switch cycling during normal operation, which is standard behavior for this type of equipment. Provided customer education regarding typical pressure switch operation and sounds associated with normal system cycling. Confirmed no repairs or adjustments were necessary as all components functioning as designed.
Responded to call regarding suspected water leak in residence following recent septic system replacement. Upon investigation, identified malfunctioning automatic sediment filter running continuously and toilet fill valve failing to shut off properly. Inspected toilet tank components and confirmed fill valve assembly was not seating correctly, causing constant water flow and contributing to excessive water usage. Documented existing conditions with photographs showing discolored water in tank and worn internal flush mechanism components including flapper valve, fill valve assembly, and chain connections. Provided estimates for replacement of defective fixtures to resolve leak issue and restore proper operation.
Performed comprehensive AC tune-up on residential cooling system. Conducted full system inspection including condenser unit evaluation, electrical measurements using clamp meter, and operational testing of all components. System found to be in excellent working condition with all parameters within normal operating range. Unit is approximately 4 years old and shows evidence of proper care and maintenance. All condenser coils, electrical connections, and mechanical components inspected and verified functional. Presented maintenance program options to homeowner for ongoing system care.
Responded to water leak at meter service valve. Upon inspection, identified heavily corroded and deteriorating service valve before the water meter with active leakage. Valve exhibited significant rust, mineral deposits, and oxidation indicating prolonged moisture exposure and age-related failure. Documented existing conditions with photographs showing the corroded valve assembly within wooden framing near water heater location. Provided detailed estimate for replacement of the defective service valve before the meter to stop the leak and restore proper function. Customer was informed of repair options and associated costs.
Responded to a warranty call for a leaking water hammer arrestor that was causing water to puddle on the floor. Upon inspection, identified a defective press fitting on the hose bibb assembly that was installed in April. Replaced the faulty press fitting to resolve the leak and restore proper function to the system.
