Heat pumps can be a great alternative to traditional air conditioners. Like an AC, they can be paired with a forced-air furnace or air handler. Heat pumps look a lot like traditional air conditioning units but they work a bit differently.
Like a traditional air conditioner, they use the refrigeration cycle to provide cool air in your home. However, these units can use the refrigeration cycle to provide heat as well. To simplify it, they basically run in reverse. The refrigeration cycle allows the heat pump or AC to absorb heat and move it from one area to another. On cooling mode, the unit absorbs the heat from inside your home and releases it outside. On heating mode, it finds heat in the ambient outdoor air and moves it inside to heat your home. While that might not seem like something that can work in our harsh, Wisconsin winters, heat pumps use technology that allow them to work in subzero temperatures.
On heating mode, heat pumps are more efficient than electric and gas-fired furnaces. This is because they don’t have to “create” heat but rather move it from one area to another. Many people who use heat pumps chose them for this reason. Higher energy efficiency means lower operating costs.
Important note for heat pump installations: if you plan to rely on your heat pump for home heating, you must choose a unit that is rated for low temperatures. There are many varieties of heat pumps. The ones that work great in Florida do not work well here. We can use heat pumps efficiently in Wisconsin but you have to have the right one!

Responded to a continuously running toilet complaint. Upon inspection, identified a worn-out flapper causing intermittent running cycles where the tank would fill, stop briefly, then run again repeatedly. Replaced the defective flapper with a new unit, restoring proper tank seal and eliminating the continuous running issue.
Replaced defective tub spout with broken shower diverter that prevented shower operation. Repaired exterior spigot that would not fully shut off to restore proper water control and prevent continuous water flow.
Performed annual air conditioning maintenance tune-up on Lennox heat pump system. Completed comprehensive inspection of indoor evaporator coil, blower assembly, and air filtration system, replacing air filter with homeowner-supplied filter. Inspected outdoor condenser unit including condenser coil, contactor, compressor, and electrical components. Verified refrigerant charge levels within manufacturer specifications. Cleaned condenser coil to remove accumulated debris and improve heat transfer efficiency. System tested and confirmed operating within normal parameters upon completion.
Replaced outdated bathroom and kitchen faucets with new builder-grade fixtures due to age and deterioration. Installed single-handle faucet in main level bathroom and kitchen faucet with side spray. Responded to service call for water heater relief valve leak. Upon inspection, identified tank leak on water heater requiring replacement. Assessed non-functioning water softener during visit. Provided quote for water heater replacement and referred water softener issue to appropriate specialist for further evaluation and repair options.
Responded to outdoor hose bib that would not shut off and was leaking through the stem. Upon arrival, found spigot temporarily controlled with attached hose. Diagnosed failed stem packing and internal valve components on weathered exterior fixture. Presented customer with repair versus replacement options, explaining benefits and costs of each approach to resolve the leak issue.
Responded to request for increased fan circulation airflow in fan-only mode on recently installed HVAC system. Inspected thermostat DIP switch settings and confirmed unit already configured for maximum airflow capacity with current basic thermostat. Explained that additional fan speed adjustment options would require upgrading to an S40 thermostat and provided pricing for that upgrade. Documented existing installation including furnace/air handler unit with flexible ductwork, PVC condensate/exhaust lines, gas line connections with brass fittings and valves, and electrical panel connections. Customer also inquired about water heater and electrical work; scheduled separate appointment to address those additional requests.
Completed comprehensive plumbing inspection of residential water heating system. Inspected 40-gallon natural gas water heater manufactured by Reliance Water Heater Co. (Model 9211614005, Serial 1117A081579, installed April 2011) and associated copper and PEX piping distribution system with dual ball valve isolation points. All components examined and photographed; system found to be in functional operating condition with age-appropriate wear patterns on copper piping and tank surfaces.
Responded to irrigation system water leak located before the meter, with municipal water supply shut off by city. Upon inspection, identified a split ball valve on the copper supply line as the source of the leak. Documented the failed valve assembly and surrounding plumbing configuration with photographs showing visible corrosion and age-related deterioration on copper piping. Provided estimate for ball valve replacement and necessary repairs to restore irrigation system functionality for HOA property.
Replaced variable speed combustion inducer assembly on residential furnace. The new inducer was an updated version that created a clearance issue with the pressure switch under the ECM housing. Removed and repositioned mounting brackets and insulated exposed terminals to achieve proper fit. Verified furnace ignition sequence and operation upon completion.
Completed comprehensive BOGO system tune-up on both furnace and air conditioning units. Performed full maintenance inspection on Lennox Elite Series gas furnace (26 years old) and air conditioner unit (approximately 26 years old, R-22 refrigerant). Both systems tested to specification and confirmed operating properly. Advised homeowner of equipment age and noted AC uses R-22 refrigerant, which may impact future service availability and costs. Homeowner considering system upgrade in the near future.
Completed Family Rewards cooling maintenance visit on Lennox air conditioning system. Performed comprehensive tune-up including hosing off outdoor coil and full system inspection. During capacitor check, discovered failed capacitor with blown top edge and oil leakage. Replaced defective capacitor under manufacturer warranty with customer approval. Verified system operation with proper 21° temperature split across evaporator coil. All remaining equipment components inspected and found to be in good working condition and functioning properly.
Completed comprehensive air conditioning tune-up on a 2-year-old system found in good working condition. Performed standard maintenance procedures including inspection of outdoor condenser unit, electrical connections at interior panel, and refrigerant lines, with all components operating within normal parameters and no issues identified.
Responded to service call for leaking outdoor hose bibbs at both front and back of property. Upon inspection, identified active leaks at both spigot locations causing water waste and potential property damage concerns. Removed deteriorated hose bibb assemblies showing significant corrosion and wear at threaded connections. Installed new brass hose bibb fixtures at both locations, ensuring proper sealing and secure mounting to exterior walls. Tested both new installations under full water pressure to verify leak-free operation and proper shutoff functionality. All connections secured and operational.
Completed same-day toilet replacement in residential bathroom. Removed existing two-piece toilet and properly disconnected water supply line. Hauled away old fixture as requested. Installed customer-supplied toilet, ensuring proper seating with new wax ring seal, secure floor bolting, and correct water supply connection. Verified flush operation and checked for leaks. Left work area clean with fully functional toilet installation.
Responded to no hot water call and found pilot light extinguished on residential tanked water heater. Successfully relit pilot light and verified proper ignition and burner operation. Confirmed hot water restoration and left unit in normal operating condition.

Coordinated arrival time with homeowners to ensure secure access to garage area. Conducted on-site assessment to evaluate existing plumbing connections, electrical requirements, and cabinet space for new dishwasher unit scheduled for delivery. Completed comprehensive AC tune-up on Goodman HVAC system in basement mechanical room. Replaced dirty air filter with new filter and addressed customer concern regarding living room vents with no airflow. Documented equipment make, model, and serial numbers per service protocol.
Responded to a water leak in the basement ceiling originating from the plumbing system serving an upstairs toilet. Upon inspection, identified a faulty mixing valve in the copper supply lines within the ceiling cavity as the source of the leak. Removed and eliminated the defective mixing valve, reconfigured the supply piping, and restored proper water flow to the toilet fixture. Verified all connections were secure and leak-free upon completion.
