Heat pumps can be a great alternative to traditional air conditioners. Like an AC, they can be paired with a forced-air furnace or air handler. Heat pumps look a lot like traditional air conditioning units but they work a bit differently.
Like a traditional air conditioner, they use the refrigeration cycle to provide cool air in your home. However, these units can use the refrigeration cycle to provide heat as well. To simplify it, they basically run in reverse. The refrigeration cycle allows the heat pump or AC to absorb heat and move it from one area to another. On cooling mode, the unit absorbs the heat from inside your home and releases it outside. On heating mode, it finds heat in the ambient outdoor air and moves it inside to heat your home. While that might not seem like something that can work in our harsh, Wisconsin winters, heat pumps use technology that allow them to work in subzero temperatures.
On heating mode, heat pumps are more efficient than electric and gas-fired furnaces. This is because they don’t have to “create” heat but rather move it from one area to another. Many people who use heat pumps chose them for this reason. Higher energy efficiency means lower operating costs.
Important note for heat pump installations: if you plan to rely on your heat pump for home heating, you must choose a unit that is rated for low temperatures. There are many varieties of heat pumps. The ones that work great in Florida do not work well here. We can use heat pumps efficiently in Wisconsin but you have to have the right one!

Responded to no-cooling complaint on 10-year-old residential air conditioning system. Upon arrival, activated unit and observed compressor operating but condenser fan motor not spinning. Removed access panel and verified electrical connections were intact. Manually freed seized motor shaft, which allowed temporary operation, but motor exhibited abnormal noise indicating imminent failure. Replaced failed condenser fan motor and installed new capacitor to ensure proper operation. System startup confirmed normal operation with 18-degree temperature split across evaporator coil, restoring full cooling capacity.
Responded to reported leak beneath water heater in basement utility area. Upon diagnostic inspection, confirmed active leak originating from the water heater tank itself, with water accumulating in the drain pan. Dried the area and monitored for continued leakage, which persisted, ruling out alternative leak sources. Determined the tank has developed a breach and requires full unit replacement. Provided estimate for installation of new 40-gallon gas vent water heater. Customer to pursue financing options before proceeding with replacement work.
Responded to callback for water softener system experiencing reported salt bridging and poor water quality affecting whole house since initial installation. Customer reported brine tank was overfilled with salt at installation, causing operational concerns. Performed comprehensive diagnostic testing of water softener and carbon filter system. Inspected brine tank for salt bridging, verified regeneration cycle operation, and tested water hardness levels at multiple fixtures throughout home. Disconnected kitchen sink faucet, dishwasher supply lines, and bathroom sink faucets to facilitate countertop replacement. Removed existing kitchen sink assembly and installed new bathroom faucets with supply line connections. All fixtures were properly disconnected from water supply valves and drain assemblies, with components staged for reinstallation upon completion of countertop work.
