Whether you need your AC replaced or you are looking to install an entirely new system, you can trust the professionals at Hurlburt to find the right AC equipment to keep your home cool and comfortable all summer long.
A trusted name in the local HVAC industry
Hurlburt has been serving the Menomonie area since 1959. That’s over 60 years of installing residential air conditioning in the community! We have grown a bit since then but still provide the same high-quality service that built our company’s name in the Menomonie area. Whatever your home’s AC needs, you can trust our team to find a solution that works for you.
We install
Most residential homes in our part of Wisconsin use central AC for their summer cooling needs. Central air conditioners use ductwork to distribute cool air throughout your home. They are paired with a furnace that circulates air in the summer and provides heat in the winter, creating a complete HVAC system.
While some energy is lost through ductwork, central AC is still one of the most efficient ways of cooling a home. Ductwork makes sure cool air gets to all areas of your home. Ductwork is typically installed when the home is built but can be added on to or adjusted during remodels.
If you are remodeling a home and adding ductwork, you might have to size up your AC as well. Your original air conditioner was sized for the square footage of your home when it was built. Adding more square footage without accounting for the increased cooling load on your AC unit will result in inefficient cooling, higher utility bills, and more wear and tear on your AC equipment.
Whether you need a replacement or an entirely new system, the Hurlburt team can help you choose the right central AC system for your home.
Heat pumps for Wisconsin homes
While heat pumps look a lot like a traditional air conditioner, these energy-efficient units are capable of providing both heating and cooling with a single system. A heat pump doesn’t have to “create” heat the same way a furnace does. It uses the refrigeration cycle to move existing heat from one area to another.
Heat pumps are more popular in southern climates but they can work effectively in Wisconsin if you get the right one. For heating use in our area, you need to install a unit with a low-temperature rating. These systems are a little more expensive but they will be able to operate during our subzero winter temps.
Heat pumps can be a great option for home heating and cooling, especially if you are looking to reduce your carbon footprint. If you use a ducted HVAC system, you will need an air handler with your heat pump to distribute the air efficiently throughout your home. Ductless Heat Pumps
Ductless heat pumps, or mini splits, have been gaining ground in our area over the last few years. These units do not require existing ductwork to be installed in your home. This makes them perfect for homes with boiler heat and remodels where it would be difficult to add to existing ductwork.
Mini-splits excel at providing strict temperature control in single rooms and small spaces. However, they can be placed in a central location with an open floor plan to serve larger areas.
Mini-splits use indoor air handlers to distribute warm and cool air. These air handlers can be mounted on the wall, the floor, or in the ceiling. The most common ones we install in Menomonie homes are wall mounts. The wall-mounted air handler does the best job of circulating air throughout the room.
Mini-splits typically need one air handler per room. This makes them perfect for zoning applications but it can be troublesome to heat and cool a large home using only mini splits. It can certainly be done but you would likely need two systems to effectively service a large home.
That being said, mini splits are the most energy-efficient HVAC solution currently on the market. Not only do they use heat pump technology for a smaller carbon footprint, but they are equipped with smart technology that automatically reduces the energy output of the AC compressor to the cooling load. Mini-splits have the lowest operating costs of all AC options.
Common applications for ductless mini splits:
Guest suites
Master bedrooms
Home offices
Attic spaces
Garage workspaces
Homes with boiler heat (no ductwork)
Remodels (difficult to add to existing ductwork)
Supplemental HVAC in large homes
Four-season rooms
Home additions
