What should I do if my AC isn’t working?
That’s easy! You should give us a call. But before you do that, there are a couple of things you can check yourself and maybe save a service call expense.
- Check your thermostat batteries. These should be changed at least once per year. If your thermostat batteries are bad, it won’t tell your AC to turn on or it could cause the system to turn on and off repeatedly. In the industry, we call this “short cycling.”
- Change your furnace filter. We see dirty filters on the job far too often. Most people simply forget to check them until there is a problem. A dirty filter can cause all sorts of issues. Your AC might blow warm air or you could see ice build up on the lines if there is enough air restriction.
- Look at your AC condenser. This is the part of the air conditioner that is outside. Take a look at the coils and see if there is a build-up of dirt or cottonwood seed. If the outside of the AC is dirty, it will not be able to release its heat and will stop cooling effectively. You can fix this problem yourself with a simple garden hose and a spray nozzle. All you need to do is spray the debris out of the coils until they are clean.
- Clean the drain fitting attached to the indoor A-coil. This coil sits right above your furnace but it is hidden behind the ductwork. You will see two copper lines going into the metal, as well as a drain fitting. Unscrew this drain fitting and clean it out. Sometimes the fitting will get clogged with debris and will cause the drain to back up and start leaking down through the furnace. You likely won’t see the water going into the furnace, but you will notice it on the floor!
If none of these fixes get your AC up and running, then it’s time to give us a call.

My AC is cooling but not like it used to. Does it need repair?
The likely answer is yes. This is a common sign of an AC unit that leaks somewhere in the system. One of the first signs of a leak is when your AC starts losing its ability to maintain the temperature setting at the thermostat. And when the leak gets big enough, it will start to freeze up and you will notice ice build up on the lines both inside and outside.
But first! Check your furnace filter. If it is dirty, that could very well be the culprit.
