Heating and Cooling Service and Installation in Minneapolis
HVAC Solutions for Homes That Were Built Differently
Minneapolis has one of the widest ranges of housing styles in the region. Early 20th-century homes are common in neighborhoods such as Lynnhurst and Kenwood, Longfellow and Nokomis are block after block of bungalows and story-and-a-half houses, and other parts of the city include duplexes, apartments, remodeled homes, and newer infill construction. That makes HVAC work very neighborhood-specific.
Many of the older homes here still heat with a hot water boiler and cast iron radiators, and plenty of those systems have been running for decades. We service and replace hot water boilers all over the city. The usual calls are a radiator that stays cold, air in the lines, a leaking valves, a circulator pump that’s quit, or a boiler old enough that parts are getting hard to find. When it’s time to replace one, the new boiler can usually connect to the radiators and piping you already have.
Cooling is the other half of the job. Older homes may have compact duct runs, finished additions, or cooling systems added decades after construction. A boiler house has no ducts at all, and the upstairs bedrooms and finished attics are the hottest rooms in July. Ductless systems handle that well, because they cool the rooms that need it without running ductwork through plaster. In other properties, newer equipment has been fitted into an older shell, and the ductwork wasn’t always sized for it. In a duplex, the two units may share one boiler or each have a system of their own. We work on furnaces, boilers, air conditioners, heat pumps, and ductless equipment, and we look at how the house is laid out before recommending anything.
Plumbing and Electrical Service and Replacement in Minneapolis
Working With Old Systems and New Demandst
Minneapolis plumbing can include decades of repairs, additions, and replacements. A fixture problem may be simple, or it may connect to older piping hidden behind finished walls. In pre-war houses that often means galvanized steel supply lines, which close up with rust on the inside until the upstairs shower barely runs. We handle drains, leaks, water heaters, fixtures, water treatment, and piping repairs throughout the city.
Water heaters are some of our most common calls in Minneapolis. We repair and replace gas and electric units, and in an older house the venting matters as much as the tank. Many water heaters here vent into the same brick chimney as the boiler or furnace. When that boiler or furnace gets swapped for a high-efficiency model that vents out the side of the house, the water heater is left alone on a chimney that’s now too big for it, and it may not draft properly. We check for that on every replacement. In a duplex, we’ll also sort out whether one tank is feeding both units or each has its own. Rusty hot water, a pilot that won’t stay lit, or water on the floor around the tank are all reasons to call.
The main sewer line is the one thing we’d have every owner of an older Minneapolis home check. Many of these houses still drain through the original clay tile pipe, laid in short sections with a joint every few feet, and boulevard tree roots work their way into those joints. The first sign is usually the basement floor drain backing up when the washer empties. We perform camera inspections through the line first so you can see what’s down there. From there we clear it with hydrojetting, or fix it with trenchless repair or relining, which avoids digging a trench across the front yard, the sidewalk, and the landscaping.
Electrical systems often face the same mismatch between age and demand. A house wired in the 1920s might have 60-amp service, a fuse box, two-prong outlets, and some knob-and-tube wiring still live in the attic. Modern appliances, central air, home offices, EV chargers, and other equipment can push older panels and circuits harder than they were designed for. We troubleshoot and upgrade panels, wiring, outlets, switches, dedicated circuits, and backup power systems.
Whole home back up generators aren’t only for lake homes and acreages. Minneapolis has a heavy tree canopy and a lot of overhead lines running down the alleys, so one storm can leave a block dark for a day or more. No power means no sump pump in a wet basement, no heat from the boiler or furnace in January, and a freezer that starts to thaw. A standby generator ties into the home’s natural gas line and kicks on automatically a few seconds after the power drops, even if nobody’s home. City lots are tight, so we work out where the unit can sit, size it to the house, install the transfer switch, and make the electrical and gas connections.
Home Service Across Minneapolis
Every Neighborhood Has Its Own Housing Story Longfellow, Nokomis, Linden Hills, Powderhorn, Northeast, and North Minneapolis all have different housing patterns, lot layouts, and renovation histories. Add in the city’s lakes, parkways, and older residential corridors, and there is no single type of Minneapolis home. That keeps service work from becoming routine. One house may have original piping and upgraded electrical. Another may have a new furnace connected to older ducts. Another may have been remodeled so heavily that tracing a system takes more time than expected. We start with the house in front of us, not a generic assumption about the neighborhood.
