Fixing Whole-Home Surge Protector Problems
The National Electrical Code, which Minnesota complies with, requires whole-house surge protection. The newest houses in neighborhoods like Ashton Ridge and Copper Hills have it. Many older houses that have required major electrical upgrades, such as backup generators and EV chargers, do as well. It’s essential to be proactive with surge protection devices (SPDs), as sudden failures can result in significant damage.
Panel-side SPDs typically have an indicator light. For example, green may indicate proper function, while red indicates a fault. You should check your SPD at least once a month and schedule a repair if there’s a fault. Whenever you experience an activation, such as during a bad storm, it is especially important to schedule SPD maintenance.
