Smart Outlets, Surge Protection, Backup Power

- Electrical Installation: Bring your home into the future with a modern electrical panel, including the latest features like surge protection. Homeowners can also enjoy great peace of mind with a whole-house generator. The next time a winter storm knocks the lights out, your generator will deliver the power you need.
Most residential properties in the “Original” Grove have natural gas access. That makes gas furnaces and boilers popular home-heating options on both sides of Great River Road. When upgrading, we encourage area homeowners to consider high-efficiency boilers and furnaces along with programmable and smart thermostats. The reduced fuel consumption can be considerable. For more substantial energy savings, customers can explore dual-fuel heat pumps or grid-based and stand-alone solar-powered add-ons for their heating.
The average water hardness in Cottage Grove is high at around 17 grains per gallon. That’s due to our proximity to the Mississippi River. If you’re unsure what your water hardness is, our technicians can test it for you. You can then explore the solutions we offer if needed. For many area homes, a water softener can save big money over the years. It can do that by protecting your pipes, fixtures, water heater, and other water-using appliances.
Some of the homes in the region, including the John P. Furber house, date back to the 1800s. It’s not unusual to find older electrical systems no longer up to code. Our team encourages all area homeowners to schedule regular electrical inspections. Even many newer homes in town don’t have whole-house surge protection. For older homes, we can upgrade the electrical panel, add GFCI and AFCI protection, and add lighting and outlets.

Diagnosed 22-year-old Carrier furnace with no heat issue caused by tripped high limit switch due to restrictive filter and potentially high gas pressure. Determined high limit switch is not resetting; ordered replacement part with 1-7 day lead time and scheduled return visit to replace high limit switch, calibrate gas pressure, and install less restrictive filter to resolve overheating condition.
Diagnosed furnace failing to enter second stage heating despite proper dip switch settings. Identified faulty circuit board not sending second stage signals. Replaced circuit board to restore proper furnace staging operation.
Performed inspection of two existing electric water heaters (50-gallon units from 2003 and 2007) that were not heating properly. Determined units require replacement rather than repair. Discussed consolidation options with customer, recommending replacement with a single larger capacity unit (75-80 gallon). Provided replacement estimate for new water heater installation.
Diagnosed and resolved no heat issue on 23-year-old Goodman 80% furnace. Inspection revealed draft motor was sticking, causing pressure switch failure and system shutdown. Replaced draft motor, which restored proper system operation and heat function. Visual inspection also noted dust accumulation on blower wheel and discoloration on control board that may require future attention.
Performed scheduled furnace tune-up on 2-year-old unit. Inspected electrical components and connections, verified proper wiring integrity. Examined heat exchanger coils which were found in good condition with no signs of damage or buildup. System operating within normal parameters, no issues detected.
Responded to customer complaint of banging/bumping sounds from ductwork during heating cycle and issues with humidifier. Inspected Aprilaire 500 Series whole-home humidifier, found cracked tubing and plugged drain line causing leakage. Replaced humidifier tubing and water panel (pad). Unable to identify source of noise potentially coming from ducts despite thorough inspection.
Performed furnace inspection on system of unknown age. Identified small crack in heat exchanger and reconnected condensate line that was leaking into cabinet. Conducted electrical diagnostics with clamp meter, measuring 0.77A draw. Customer plans to save through membership program for future system upgrade.
Responded to service call for clogged kitchen sink that was operating normally for a few minutes before drainage stopped. Diagnosed slow drainage issue; inspected garbage disposal unit and PVC drain assembly including P-trap. System was cleared and proper drainage function restored.
Responded to no heat complaint on 6-year-old furnace blowing cold air. Inspection revealed dirty filter and mouse infestation in unit. Replaced filter to restore proper airflow and heat output. Documented electrical panel condition for reference.
Repaired frozen/burst water supply lines in bathroom with minimal heat. Installed multiple ball valves at strategic points to allow for isolation of this section of the plumbing system, preventing future damage during cold periods when the bathroom isn't in use.
Performed standard furnace tune-up and maintenance inspection. Identified failing flame sensor during diagnostic evaluation and replaced component to restore proper system operation and prevent potential ignition failures.
Responded to no-heat service call for a 10-year-old Burnham boiler system. Upon inspection and testing, confirmed all components were functioning properly with no operational issues found. Systematically verified proper thermostat communication, zone valve operation, and appropriate boiler firing sequence. System pressure readings were within normal parameters and all zones were heating correctly after activation.
Performed comprehensive assessment of 14-year-old leaking A.O. Smith gas water heater for replacement. Evaluated household hot water demands (3 residents with frequent simultaneous usage and extended showers) to determine appropriate sizing for recommended tankless solution. Discussed various options including Rheem Prestige series with built-in recirculation capability and potential addition of outdoor hot water spigot. Documented existing gas line configuration and mechanical room layout for proper installation planning.
Conducted comprehensive plumbing inspection of residential property. Verified water heater installation in utility area with proper copper and PVC connections. All plumbing systems found to be in good working condition with no issues requiring repair.
Diagnosed Rheem Performance Platinum electric water heater displaying a 12-4 error code indicating lower element failure. Determined that the lower element resistor had failed while the heating element itself was still functional. Replaced faulty resistor component to restore proper operation of the water heater system.
Conducted comprehensive tune-up inspection on 15-year-old Goodman furnace. Diagnostic testing revealed weakening blower capacitor, draft motor capacitor, and flame sensor; additionally observed dirty blower wheel and temperature stress on heat exchanger (no cracks or holes present). All other components, including igniter, motor amp draws, and combustion analysis, tested within manufacturer specifications. Customer informed of findings and maintenance options for landlord's consideration.
Performed diagnostics on 8-9 year old furnace reporting no heat output despite thermostat set to 75°F with actual temperature reading 59°F. Discovered multiple closed supply vents restricting proper airflow. Opened all vents to restore proper system airflow and circulation. System now operating within normal parameters and producing appropriate heat.
Inspected furnace exhaust system in response to customer complaint of gurgling sounds. Identified water accumulation in the exhaust pipe and inducer assembly. Corrected the issue by draining collected water and adjusting the exhaust pipe pitch to ensure proper condensate flow and prevent future water buildup.
Diagnosed 25-year-old Trane gas furnace with no heat and burning odor. Found seized blower motor and identified multiple cracks in the heat exchanger via inspection camera. Although cracks were not severe enough to require immediate system shutdown, advised customer of potential carbon monoxide hazard and scheduled follow-up consultation to discuss replacement options.
Completed furnace tune-up maintenance per annual service agreement. Performed comprehensive system inspection including gas pressure verification, heat exchanger examination, and carbon monoxide testing with all readings within normal parameters. Cleaned flame sensor, burners, and orifice; inspected supply/return vents. Noted potential heat loss issues due to 16+ foot ceilings and undersized system (50,000 BTU for 2,600 sq.ft home). Recommended dehumidifier installation to improve comfort on basement level.
